I am filled with joy and my soul vibrates with exuberant HOPE because of the Eternal my God. Isaiah 61:10
Hope WINS during times of great sorrow because pain is replaced by joy, desperation with comfort and sobbing with dancing.
Context
Jesus read part of this passage when He stood up in the synagogue in his hometown, Nazareth. He was doing what he normally did, but this time was different. He had been preparing for his life’s mission for a long time. This time as he unrolled the scroll of Isaiah and read the firsts few verses about his purpose for coming to earth. He declared that the prophecies from 700 years before were being fulfilled. He was saying, “I’m the Messiah.” (You can read more in Luke 4:17-21)
The Great Exchange
The word pictures in verse 2 and 3 are so rich with deep meaning for those who are walking through grief. Those hearing these words were familiar with mourning rituals. They would wail loudly, tear their clothes and put ashes on their heads. The good news is that God wants to exchange the ashes of regret and sorrow for a beautiful headdress that represents victory and joy. The oil of joy will serve to further take away the ashen color that grieving leaves.
It is interesting that in Psalm 23:4-5 we see the same reference to death followed up by anointing. “Even in the unending shadows of death’s darkness,
I am not overcome by fear. because You are with me in those dark moments, near with Your protection and guidance, I am comforted. You spread out a table before me, provisions in the midst of attack from my enemies;
You care for all my needs, anointing my head with soothing, fragrant oil, filling my cup again and again with Your grace.”

The greatest gift in these tough times is his presence, protection and guidance.
HOPE WINS!
Prayer
Thank You, Lord, for exchanging my sadness for joy. I am so grateful that I do not have to wear the ashes any more. I identify with life and joy in Your presence. I put my hope in you and rejoice even in the midst of it all. Thank You that you will provide me with exuberant HOPE as I continue to expel fear through Your love, protection and guidance. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
