How enriched are they who find their strength in the Lord; within their hearts are the highways of holiness! They grow stronger and stronger with every step forward, and the God of all gods will appear before them in Zion. Psalm 84: 5, 7 TPT
One of the things that I admire most about Dad is his sense of adventure. Nothing stopped him from moving forward and fulfilling God’s will in his life. He had the call to be a missionary and sent in his application every year for eleven years. At the age of 39, many would have backed out for fear of taking their family into dangerous countries. As kids, we were excited because Mom and Dad were excited. My parents studied Spanish for a year but we only knew how to say, “Hola amigo.”
One of our favorite family stories involves a drive down to Nicaragua on the Panamerican Highway. The biggest challenge is that the road only went to the Southern part of Mexico. From that unknown point the car was put on a train and we rode the rest of the way to Guatemala where the road started up again.
Dad decided that he and my brother would stay with the car so that our stuff would be safe while Mom, my sister and I went to the passenger section. We rode throughout the night and the train stopped in many small towns along the way. On one of many stops, my brother decided to join us. He hopped off and started running toward the passenger area of the train. Right then, the train started back up. Fortunately, it didn’t go far before it stopped again and my brother was able to make it to be with us. When I asked Dad if he was scared he simply said, “I knew the Lord was taking care of us.”
That was the first of many drives down through Central America to get to one of the countries where my parents served as missionaries. That was just what they did. If they were afraid, we never knew about it. They had a simple way of enjoying the best of life with trust and peace.
