One of the biggest challenges during a season of grief comes when the weather matches your despair. Yet hope remains constant and reigns on the darkest days.

The first time we called 911 for my late husband, Bill, I experienced this first-hand.

After they put him in the ambulance I chose to drive my car so I could bring him home. I requested that they take him to University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) because his Muscular Dystrophy specialists were there.

“Ma’am, we will do our best but you need to know that if his condition gets worse we will stop at the closest hospital in order to get him the help he needs.

I got to UTSW as soon as I could. My heart sank when they told me my husband was not there.

As I got in my car I asked the Lord, “Is Bill going to die?” No answer was forthcoming.

Tears filled my eyes as I began to think the worst had happened. My mind quickly played out some pretty desperate scenarios that brought with them a growing sense of doom.

As I got back on the freeway to head to the other hospital I glanced up briefly to see the most spectacular array of Hope Rays that I had ever seen.

I felt a surge of hope. I could choose to focus on the difficulties or on the hope of the One who would bring us through this time with His love and grace.

I felt a calm reassurance of God’s presence and His peace that went beyond what I could understand.

If you are going through a dark season choose to look up on the darkest days.

In the tough days ahead, as my husband’s caregiver and then as a widow, the hope rays were always there for me when I most needed them. No exceptions!

I would have missed them if I had not looked up. Hope, comfort, mercy are all there for you as you look up from your circumstances to the provision of your Heavenly Father.
