Be thankful. Colossians 3:15

Gratitude and love are deeply interwoven. When you love someone you do not take them for granted. You see the many things they do through loving eyes and want to thank them for your heart.
Anger, on the other hand, stops that response and replaces it with lack of trust and dissatisfaction. Forgiveness flows when you surround your heart with thankfulness and a perspective of abundance rather than lack.
There are many research projects that show the results of the impact of gratitude. Something as simple as writing in a gratitude journal for 5 – 10 minutes a day resulted in decreased pain, increased energy, getting more done each day and improved mental health for 65 adults with neuromuscular disease.

Ideas to Expand Gratitude

  1. Mental shift – When tempted to complain replace it with thanks for what others do for you behind the scenes.
  2. Count blessings – I am grateful every day that I can breathe and I can swallow. I saw another sunrise and God has provided abundantly for my needs and the needs of my family. Shift your focus from the negative to the positive.
  3. Pray – Prayer can become the release of all that you do not control. Let it go!
  4. Write thank you notes – Take the time to write a note to someone who would not expect it.  Honor them for all they do. Acknowledge their efforts and express sincere appreciation.

Prayer

Thank You, Lord, for the admonition to BE thankful. I ask You to shift my focus from what I may lack to all that You have abundantly provided. I am grateful. Thank You for many opportunities to honor the unsung heroes in my life who may never hear a word of thanks. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
